The Cross River State Commissioner for Information, Erasmus Ekpang, has assured journalists in the state of improved welfare and sustained government support, acknowledging their role in projecting the image of the state.
Ekpang gave the assurance on Monday during a visit to the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) secretariat in Calabar, where he inspected the completed projects and engaged members of the union.
He commended journalists for their resilience and professionalism, noting that their work has helped to balance public perception of the state by highlighting both achievements and challenges.
“We will continue to support journalists’ welfare. Your work is critical to governance and development, and we recognise the sacrifices you make in keeping the public informed,” he said.
The commissioner also pledged to strengthen collaboration between the state government and the media, assuring that concerns raised by journalists would receive prompt attention.
“Bring your needs forward. Leadership responds better when issues are clearly presented. With access to the governor, we will ensure that something is done,” he added.
Ekpang further described the current administration as media-friendly, stressing that transparency and open engagement with the press remain key priorities.
Earlier, the Chairman of the NUJ in the state, Archibong Bassey, appreciated the commissioner for the visit and his continued support for the union.
She said the completed projects at the NUJ secretariat were aimed at improving the working environment for journalists and enhancing professional standards.
“We appreciate the commissioner for identifying with us and for his commitment to the welfare of journalists. This visit is encouraging and shows that the government values the role of the media,” she said.
Bassey also reiterated the union’s commitment to responsible journalism, assuring that members would continue to uphold ethical standards while contributing to the development of the state.
The visit also featured the presentation of a letter of appreciation to the state governor for his support to the union, as well as discussions on areas of further collaboration between the government and the media.
