The formal inauguration of Rt. Hon. Dr. Orok Duke as Chairman of the Cross River State Table Tennis Association on Monday, May 4, 2026, felt less like a new beginning and more like the continuation of a long, defining journey. Performed by the Chairman of the Cross River State Sports Commission, Hon. Etta Lawrence, the ceremony brought together a slate of respected figures entrusted with repositioning sports administration across the state. Yet, among them, Duke’s appointment carried a certain inevitability shaped by decades of visible impact.

Long before this elevation, Duke had carved out a reputation as one of the most consistent champions of sports development in Cross River State and Nigeria. His tenure as the state’s Sports Ambassador from 2007, followed by his leadership of the Cross River State Sports Commission between 2015 and 2019, reflected a deliberate focus on structure, continuity, and grassroots growth rather than short term gains.

At the heart of this legacy lies the Canaan Table Tennis Club of Calabar, a project that has evolved under his stewardship into a formidable force within Nigeria’s table tennis landscape. What began as a revival effort in the late 1980s, at a time when the sport in Cross River had been weakened by the post-1987 exodus of coaches and players, gradually transformed into a sustained model of excellence. Working closely with Coach Richard George Edem, Duke helped rebuild the sport from its foundations, prioritizing discipline, talent identification, and institutional backing.

Over nearly four decades, that effort has paid off. The club is not only a consistent medal contributor but has also become one of the most recognizable sporting brands in the state. Through strategic engagement with successive administrations, Duke ensured that table tennis delivered the highest medal returns among more than 30 sporting disciplines under the state’s commission.

One of the most defining moments of his earlier leadership came with the installation of professional Taraflex flooring at the U.J. Esuene Stadium table tennis hall. Imported from China and meeting International Table Tennis Federation standards, the facility elevated Cross River into a select category of Nigerian states capable of hosting major national and international competitions.

Beyond infrastructure, Duke’s influence is perhaps most evident in the athletes his system has produced. Under the Canaan framework, players such as Offiong Edem, Funke Oshonaike, Cecilia Otu, and Janet Effiom rose to prominence, becoming trailblazers for Nigerian women in table tennis. Their emergence did more than add medals. It challenged entrenched gender limitations within the sport and expanded the country’s presence on the global stage.

Offiong Edem, in particular, went on to represent Nigeria at multiple Olympic Games, while Cecilia Otu secured continental victories, including women’s doubles gold at the All Africa Games and a national singles title. Funke Oshonaike and Janet Effiom similarly built international careers, their journeys rooted in the disciplined environment Duke helped nurture.

Importantly, his approach has never been confined to elite performance alone. In 2021, Duke extended support across cadet, junior, and senior categories, producing a new generation of talents such as Idorenyin Udoaka and Vivian Oku. This continuity between past and emerging athletes speaks to a system designed not just to win, but to endure.

Recent milestones further underline that consistency. In June 2024, Canaan Queens finished as runners up at the African Club Table Tennis Championships in Benghazi, Libya. By January 2025, the Nigeria Table Tennis Federation had nominated the club to represent the country at the continental championships in Tunis, Tunisia, affirming its national standing. That same year, Canaan players were instrumental in securing a joint overall table tennis victory for Cross River at the Niger Delta Youth Sports Festival in Uyo, coinciding with the club’s 35th anniversary.

The momentum continued with Hope Udoaka’s emergence as national female champion at the 5th Michael and Felicia Alabi Memorial Championships in Osun State, another testament to the depth of talent within the system.

Duke himself has consistently framed these achievements within a broader philosophy. He has argued that sports development must move beyond survival instincts, insisting that talent should be nurtured through deliberate investment rather than shaped by economic hardship. During his time at the Sports Commission, this thinking translated into football clinics, partnerships, and innovative funding strategies that kept Cross River competitive even in the face of financial constraints.

In acknowledging recent successes, he also paid tribute to Governor Senator Prince Bassey Edet Otu, commending what he described as unwavering support for sports development in the state. That alignment between policy and execution has clearly played a role in sustaining progress.

Today, the imprint of Duke’s work is visible across multiple layers of the sporting ecosystem. It is reflected in medals won, in athletes competing internationally, and in the presence of infrastructure that meets global standards. More subtly, it is evident in the continuity of a system that has produced champions across generations without losing direction.

To sum it all, Rt. Hon. Orok Duke’s work, particularly through the Canaan Table Tennis Club of Calabar, has produced some of Nigeria’s most prominent female table tennis figures, created elite training infrastructure, maintained multi generational talent development and positioned Cross River as a hub of table tennis excellence in Nigeria and Africa.

Seen from this vantage point, his appointment as Chairman of the Cross River State Table Tennis Association is both fitting and strategic. It represents not just recognition of past contributions, but a deliberate decision by the State Sports Commission under Hon. Etta Lawrence to place the future of the sport in the hands of someone who has already spent decades building it.
