Retired Nigerian table tennis luminary, Edem Offiong, has embarked on a new professional chapter as she assumes a coaching role at the prestigious Lonestar Table Tennis Academy in Austin, Texas.
The five-time Olympian, who officially bowed out of competitive table tennis after the Paris 2024 Olympic Games, has been hailed as a strategic addition to the academy’s coaching faculty, bringing a wealth of experience amassed over two decades of elite competition.
In a statement, the academy expressed its delight at securing Offiong’s expertise: “We are thrilled to announce that five-time Olympian Edem Offiong is joining Lonestar Table Tennis Academy as a full-time practice partner.”
Welcoming the former African champion into its ranks, the academy underscored her immense contribution to the sport and her potential to nurture the next generation of table tennis prodigies.
Offiong, who took to social media to announce her transition into coaching, described the move as both a calling and a source of fulfillment.
“Austin, Texas is where I find my peace. I decided to move to the USA after my retirement to coach young enthusiasts. Coaching has been so rewarding, I must say, and soon we will be known and heard for our good deeds,” she stated.
She further expressed gratitude to the academy for entrusting her with the responsibility of shaping future stars: “Thank you to Lonestar Table Tennis Academy for believing in me and giving me this opportunity to grow these young stars. It’s all about passion, and I’m grateful.”
Offiong’s remarkable career saw her represent Nigeria at five Olympic Games, multiple African Games and Championships, as well as World and Commonwealth Championships, cementing her legacy as one of the nation’s most decorated paddlers.
Her transition into coaching has been met with resounding applause, particularly from her home state of Cross River. Chief Orok Otu Duke, the Cross River State NDDC Representative, lauded her commitment to the sport and her willingness to give back.
“Offiong has truly demonstrated sincere passion for the game, a clear case of retired but not tired. Going into coaching coupled with her experience in the game, she will her go places,” he remarked.
With her vast experience and deep-seated passion, Offiong’s foray into coaching promises to leave an indelible mark on the global table tennis landscape.
