The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission has confirmed the arrest of social media activists Martins Vincent Otse, widely known as Verydarkman, following multiple allegations of financial crimes.

In a statement released by the Commission, on Tuesday the EFCC explained that Otse was invited for questioning due to a series of petitions accusing him of serious financial malfeasance.

The Anti-graft agency noted that despite several invitations being sent to Otse through his known addresses and communication channels, the social media influencer failed to show up for the investigations.

“The petitions against Martins Otse involve grave allegations of financial misconduct which the EFCC cannot ignore, his refusal to honor the invitations prompted the Commission to take the necessary legal steps.”-the Statement reads.

The EFCC also addressed concerns about Otse’s previous public criticisms of the agency’s operations, clarifying that his arrest was not influenced by his attacks. “While we acknowledge the unguarded attacks against the EFCC, his arrest was not motivated by these comments,” the Commission emphasized. “The law enforcement agencies will address any issues related to those attacks.”

The Commission affirmed that, as per the law, Otse is being held in custody pending further investigations. A Remand Order was obtained, and he has been offered administrative bail, which he can secure once he fulfills the required conditions.

The EFCC also took the opportunity to address public concerns, urging Nigerians to allow the Commission to carry out its duties without unnecessary interference.

“The passion and interest from the public in our work is appreciated. However, insinuations about our motives should be set aside,” the statement continued. “The EFCC is committed to carrying out its responsibilities without fear or favour. Once investigations are concluded, appropriate charges will be filed.”

The arrest of Martins Otse has sparked widespread discussion, with many following the developments closely. The EFCC assured that due process would be followed in the investigation, and charges would be brought if necessary.
