UNICAL VC Pledges To Reposition Registry, Correct Abnormalities

The Vice Chancellor of the University of Calabar, Prof. Offiong Efanga Offiong, has pledged to take decisive actions to correct abnormalities and reposition the Registry Department, describing it as the “heart” of the institution. This information which emanated from the Public Relations Unit of the University of Calabar and made available to Primetime News authoritatively reports.

Prof. Offiong made the pledge during the 3rd Registry Day celebration held at the Godswill Akpabio International Conference Centre.

The University helmsman emphasized his commitment to ensuring the Registry functions efficiently and effectively, addressing challenges that have hindered its performance.

He noted that the Registry Day should be a day of sober reflection, a moment to take stock of the department’s successes and failures, strengths and weaknesses, in order to chart a way forward for improved service delivery.

Prof. Offiong also emphasized the crucial role of staff in the university’s progress, stating that their inputs can either make or mar the efforts of the current administration.

He urged staff to be committed and diligent in their duties, underscoring the importance of their contributions to the university’s overall success.

The Vice Chancellor also promised to provide the Registry department with the necessary working tools and resources, enabling it to perform at optimal capacity and deliver excellent services to the university community.

Prof. Offiong further announced plans to embark on the training and retraining of Registry staff, emphasizing the need for them to be digitally inclined.

He urged staff to acquire computer skills, noting that his administration is transiting from an analog to a digital system, saying it is imperative for staff to be equipped to operate in the new digital landscape.

The Vice Chancellor also expressed concern over the leak of official University documents to social media, warning that such actions compromise the institution’s integrity.

He urged staff to desist from this practice, emphasizing that it will no longer be tolerated.

Prof. Offiong warned that staff found guilty of leaking documents will face consequences, stressing that the era of impunity is over and his administration will take a firm stance on this issue.

The Varsity administrator reiterated his vision to transform the University of Calabar into a world-class institution that meets global standards.

He emphasized his openness to ideas and suggestions from individuals and groups, encouraging stakeholders to contribute to the university’s growth and development.

The Registrar of the University of Calabar, Dr. Mrs. Chukwuka Icha, described the Registry Day celebration as a timely platform for administrators to address pressing national issues and enhance staff capabilities.

She noted that the event provides an opportunity for staff to acquire the necessary skills, talents, and technical expertise to excel in their duties, ultimately contributing to the university’s overall success.

Dr. Icha also emphasized the importance of preparing staff for life after retirement, stating that the Registry is committed to equipping them with the tools and knowledge needed to thrive beyond their service years.

She revealed that the topics of the Registry Day, ” Rebuilding Nigeria for sustainable Development: The Stethoscope on Corruption and Good Governance” and ” A Holistic Well-being and Productivity: Navigating the Health, Stress and Retirement Challenges of the University Workers” , was carefully chosen to reflect topical national issues, emphasizing the university’s commitment to contributing to the country’s development and progress.

Dr. Icha further stated that the Registry Day event is expected to collectively sharpen the staff’s administrative skills, enabling them to contribute more effectively to the university’s mission and vision through the provision of excellent administrative support to the Management of the University.

She expressed gratitude to the non-teaching staff of the University for their tireless work and dedication to duty over the years, which has ensured the smooth operation of the University, acknowledging their invaluable contributions to the institution’s growth and success.

Dr. Icha described the Vice Chancellor, Prof. Offiong Efanga Offiong, as a ‘father’ and thanked him for gracing the occasion with his esteemed presence.

She solicited the Vice Chancellor’s support for the construction of a befitting Registry building, stating that this project will further enhance staff productivity and provide a conducive working environment.

Dr. Icha also announced that the Registry department intends to collaborate with the Alumni of the University to secure funding for the proposed Registry building project, leveraging the alumni’s support and resources to bring this vision to reality.

The Chairman of the Occasion, Barr. Chris Agara, pledged to support the University administration, stating that he is impressed by the progress made so far and is committed to contributing to the institution’s continued growth and development.

He commended the Vice Chancellor’s vision and leadership, noting that it is a breath of fresh air in the university’s administration.

Barr. Agara also urged the Registry staff to take advantage of the training and retraining opportunities being offered, emphasizing that it is a rare opportunity to upgrade their skills and enhance their career prospects.

He encouraged them to be committed to their duties and strive for excellence in all they do, assuring them that their efforts will not go unnoticed.

Two keynote presentations were made at the event: “Rebuilding Nigeria for Sustainable Development: The Stethoscope on Corruption and Good Governance” by Mrs. Glory Ekpo Oho, MD Cross River State Basin Development Authority, and “A Holistic Well-being and Productivity: Navigating the Health, Stress and Retirement Challenges of University Workers” by Mrs. Blossom Okorie, Registrar of the University of Uyo.

The event culminated in the presentation of awards to deserving staff recognizing their outstanding contributions to the University’s growth.

The 12th Vice Chancellor, Prof. Offiong Efanga Offiong, and the outgoing Vice Chancellor, Prof. Florence Obi, were honored for their remarkable service.

Additionally, retired senior administrators and serving members of staff were recognized for their dedication and immense contributions to the institution.
