The Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), Cross River State Council, has joined the rest of the state and the national media community in celebrating a revered elder statesman and former Governor of Cross River State, His Excellency, Chief Clement David Ebri, on the occasion of his 73rd birthday.

In a statement dated December 11, 2025 and signed by the Chairman of Council, Comrade Archibong Bassey, the Union described Chief Ebri as “a phenomenon whose intellect, vision and steadfast commitment to public good birthed an entire generation of political leaders now excelling in governance and other spheres of national development.”

According to the NUJ, Chief Ebri’s story remains incomplete without recognising his deep-rooted foundation in journalism. Long before he ascended the governorship seat, he made his mark as a journalist of outstanding merit with the historic Nigerian Chronicle, one of Nigeria’s longest-standing newspapers dating back to the 1970s. His early career, the Union noted, shaped his approach to leadership, anchored on truth, accountability and a profound respect for public trust.

“Chief Clement David Ebri is not just a former governor. He is a patriotic statesman who thinks Cross River, breathes Cross River and continues to work tirelessly for the upliftment of our dear state,” the statement read. “His blend of humility, courage, intellect and foresight has made him a symbol of principled leadership across Nigeria.”

The Union extolled the former governor’s contributions to political stability, institutional strengthening and community development, describing his tenure as one that left enduring footprints on the state’s governance landscape.

“As journalists, we hold Chief Ebri in very high regard,” the statement continued. “His journey from the newsroom of the Nigerian Chronicle to the pinnacle of political authority remains a powerful inspiration to media professionals and young leaders alike. He stands out as one of the brightest lights in Cross River’s history.”

The NUJ prayed for God’s continuous grace upon the elder statesman, wishing him good health, renewed strength and many more fulfilling years.

“His legacy is evergreen, his wisdom timeless, and his service to state and nation immeasurable. We celebrate an icon,” the Union affirmed.
