In a significant political shift, Barr. Edet Effiong Bassey, the former legal adviser of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) in Odukpani Chapter, has officially defected to the All Progressive Congress (APC). His defection was marked by a grand reception organized by the Cross River State APC, Chairman Barr. Alphonsus Eba, the Secretary, Pst. Patrick Asikpo Okon, and attended by the Ward Chairman, Mr. Edet Asuquo, alongside the leadership of the ward, stakeholders, ward party officers, chapter officers, and the Usung Esuk community. The entire Odot sons and daughters, both at home and in the diaspora, were present to witness the event.

In his welcoming remarks, the State Chairman, Barr. Alphonsus Eba , praised Barr. Edet Bassey’s decision, describing it as a bold initiative that aligns with the dynamic changes within the party. He stated, “We started our political evangelism long ago and we are still reaping the fruits to date. What the party is doing today is to consolidate on our gains as a people. We know that the period of electioneering is over but it is not out of place to put our house in order. Barr. Edet brings values, his wealth of experience and forthrightness can be counted as our gain.”

Eba further highlighted Barr. Edet’s grassroots mobilization skills and his deep connection with the people, noting, “He is a take charge person, a grassroots mobilizer and holds the pulse of the people from his track records in and out of politics. We have no doubt in his ability and we believe that he will create a balance in our policy drive and the people-oriented programmes of His Excellency, Sen. Prince Bassey Edet Otu, the ‘People First’ Governor of Cross River.”

Ward Chairman Mr. Edet Asuquo echoed similar sentiments, describing Barr. Edet Bassey as politically solid and people-oriented. He added, “Barr. Edet will serve as the connect between the people at all levels. He is sagacious and transparent, with a progressive toga that was evident long before his defection.”

In his response, Barr. Edet Effiong Bassey expressed his gratitude to the party’s leadership at all levels for their warm welcome. He particularly thanked the State Secretary of the party, Pastor Patrick Asikpo Okon, who has displayed great leadership and has also opened his eyes and mind to the ideals of the party. He affirmed his commitment to the APC and vowed to contribute to the party’s continued success. He stated his readiness to support the state’s development, particularly highlighting the recent flag-off of crop cultivation in Odukpani and his dedication to the Green Economy Revolution.

The event’s high points included the presentation of Barr. Edet’s membership slip, photo sessions, and various side attractions, marking a new chapter in Cross River State’s political landscape.
