The President of the Students’ Union Government of the University of Cross River State Igbeng Emmanuel Lazarus, has been suspended indefinitely, following serious allegations of financial misconduct and constitutional breaches.
The decision, made by the UNICROSS SUG Senate, follows multiple petitions filed against the President by key executive members, including the Financial Secretary and the Treasurer.
The petitions cited concerns ranging from misconduct, violation of constitutional rights of executive members, to the alleged misappropriation of over six million Naira.
According to a statement, issued on Friday, by Joana Etim, the chief whip 1 of the Student body senate, the suspension was executed in line with Section 21, Sub-section IV of the Students’ Union Government Constitution, which empowers the Senate to suspend any officer under investigation.
The Senate, by a simple majority, resolved to suspend the President and has constituted an Ad-Hoc Committee to thoroughly investigate the allegations.
“The Senate is committed to upholding fairness, equity, and justice in accordance with the SUG Constitution,.
“Accountability and transparency remain core values of the Union, and appropriate measures will be taken to ensure the truth prevails.”-The statement reads.
The statement added that in the interim, the Vice President of the Students’ Union, Odoma Possibility has been appointed as the Acting President and will assume all presidential responsibilities until further notice.
