Governor Bassey Otu reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to securing the state waterways during a meeting with Commodore Ajumobi Oride, the newly appointed Commander of the Nigerian Navy Ship (NNS) Victory.

The meeting held on Monday at Dan Archibong Lodge the temporary office of the Governor, was at the instance of the Nigerian Navy’s efforts in securing the state’s waterways, protecting fishing communities, and combating maritime crimes.

During the meeting the Governor praised the Navy’s dedication to maintaining peace along the coastline, which has contributed significantly to economic activities, especially in the fishing sector.

The governor emphasized the Navy’s dedicated patrols across the state’s coastal areas, ensuring safe navigation along the waterways, particularly in relation to the Bakassi Deep Sea Port project. He underscored the port’s strategic importance to Cross River’s economic future and pledged continued government support to facilitate its successful implementation.

Acknowledging the operational challenges faced by the Navy, Governor Otu reiterated his administration’s commitment to providing essential resources to enhance security efforts. He noted the recent procurement of two patrol boats and assured that additional support, including housing and logistical assistance, would be considered to further strengthen maritime security.

“The presence of the Navy in our waters has not only improved security but has also given our people, especially our fishermen, the confidence to conduct their businesses without fear. This is the kind of synergy we must continue to foster for the economic growth of Cross River State,” the governor stated.

He further assured the Commander of his administration’s unwavering support, particularly in the provision of fuel and lubricants to sustain naval operations.

In his remarks, Commodore Ajumobi Oride expressed gratitude to the governor for the warm reception and the administration’s continued support for the Nigerian Navy.

“The support of the state government has been instrumental in enabling our operations, particularly through the provision of vehicles and critical logistical assistance. My predecessor spoke highly of the unwavering support and strong collaboration between NNS Victory and the state government. This is highly commendable. The Nigerian Navy remains steadfast in its commitment to safeguarding our territorial waters and ensuring maritime security,” Commodore Oride stated.

He underscored the Navy’s dedication to maintaining security along Cross River’s waterways, noting that increased naval presence has already led to a rise in fishing activity, as fishermen feel safer to operate.

The NNS Victory Commander also provided updates on recent surveying operations around the Calabar Channel, emphasizing the Navy’s commitment to ensuring safe and efficient navigation for vessels, particularly in preparation for the Bakassi Deep Sea Port.

However, he highlighted the need for additional resources to sustain operations, particularly more boats and an increased fuel supply to enhance patrols in shallow areas. He assured the governor of the Navy’s continued collaboration with other security agencies to curb criminal activities such as kidnapping and illegal maritime operations.
