In a press statement released on May 20, by the 3rd Force, decried the appointments as a deliberate effort to undermine the state. “Our state has been left in the lurch, with glaring underrepresentation that fails to reflect our political significance within the region,” the release states.

The statement, signed by Mennanse Ushang-Edem, spokesperson of the 3rd Force, decried what it described as the machinations of a faction of “bucaneer political carpetbaggers” intent on undermining the governor’s efforts. The 3rd Force accused these individuals of pursuing selfish ambitions ahead of the 2027 gubernatorial race, thereby destabilizing the state’s representation at the federal level.”

This group is driven by selfish ambitions for the 2027 gubernatorial race, and their machinations have now come to light,” the statement read. “Their actions are akin to throwing a spanner in the works, intending to create disunity and portray the governor as ineffective in securing federal appointments.”

According to the 3rd Force, this faction’s primary goal is to position themselves favourably for the 2027 gubernatorial race, even if it means creating disunity and portraying the governor as ineffective in securing federal appointments.

“We unequivocally state that such backstabbing tactics will not be tolerated,” the statement declared. “It is crucial for the prosperity of Cross River state that we present a united front and capitalize on our unique position as an APC stronghold in the South-South.”

The 3rd Force emphasized the need for solidarity among the people of Cross River state, urging them to resist the divisive tactics of these political actors. “We are not blind to your underhanded tactics, and we will not stand idly by while you try to pull the wool over our eyes,” the statement warned those it accused of destabilizing efforts.

Governor Bassey Otu, who has been at the center of this controversy, received full support from the 3rd Force. The group highlighted his efforts in advancing the state’s interests and called on all residents to rally behind his leadership. “We will not allow political ambitions and selfish desires to derail the good work being done for the people of Cross River,” Ushang-Edem affirmed.

In their call to action, the 3rd Force demanded that the federal government rectify what they described as a “gross oversight” in the appointment process. They urged for equitable treatment that recognizes the contributions and political alignment of Cross River state within the national framework. “The strength of our nation lies in its unity and fairness, and we believe that every state deserves equitable treatment,” the statement asserted.

The group pledged to continue monitoring the situation and indicated readiness to take further actions if necessary. They stressed that the interest of Cross River state remains paramount and that they would not be deterred by the “machinations of a few.”

As the controversy unfolds, the 3rd Force’s call for fair representation highlights the ongoing political dynamics and the quest for equitable recognition in federal appointments. The group’s resolve to stand firm against perceived injustices resonates with a broader narrative of regional balance and political fairness in Nigeria’s diverse landscape.

Truly, interesting days await us in Cross River State in the political space in 2027.
