Relief has come to residents of Uyanga community in Akamkpa Local Government Area following the successful completion and activation of two motorised boreholes at the Opopo axis and Afia Ntan, ending years of acute water scarcity.
The intervention, executed by the Akamkpa Local Government Council under the leadership of its Chairman, Hon. (Ophot) Felix Akposi KSJI, has restored access to safe and potable drinking water for hundreds of households that previously relied on unsafe sources and long treks to neighbouring communities.
Speaking on the development, Hon. Akposi acknowledged that progress in some areas had been gradual but assured residents that the pace of development would soon accelerate significantly. According to him, all necessary plans have been concluded and the council is now set to move with renewed speed and focus.
“While the journey may have appeared slow at the beginning, we are now at a point where progress will increase geometrically. The groundwork has been laid, and we are ready to hit the ground running to deliver more people-focused projects,” the Chairman said.
Beyond the Opopo axis and Afia Ntan, a similar milestone has also been recorded in the heart of Uyanga town, further expanding access to clean water and underscoring the council’s resolve to address basic infrastructure deficits across the community.
Residents have expressed deep appreciation for the intervention, describing it as timely and life-changing. Mr. Happiness Anderson noted that water scarcity had for years been a major challenge, affecting hygiene, health and daily living. He said the boreholes have restored dignity and reduced the burden on women and children who often traveled long distances in search of water.
Mrs. Deborah Eku echoed the sentiments, thanking the Chairman for what she described as a compassionate and responsive gesture. She added that the availability of potable water has brought relief to families and reduced the incidence of water-related illnesses.
The project forms part of the Akamkpa Local Government Council’s broader commitment to improving rural infrastructure and enhancing the quality of life of residents. With the successful completion of the boreholes, expectations are high that similar interventions will soon follow in other underserved communities within the local government area.
