In celebration of Democracy Day and in honour of the historic June 12, 1993 elections, a prominent Cross River-based community news platform, The Beagle News, has named Senator Jarigbe Agom Jarigbe as its 2025 Hero of Democracy.
The award, which recognises individuals who have shown unwavering commitment to democratic ideals and public service, was bestowed on the senator following what the editorial board described as a “rigorous editorial review and an independent opinion survey” conducted among readers across the state.
Senator Jarigbe, who represents Cross River North Senatorial District at the National Assembly, was commended for his grassroots-oriented approach to governance, his vocal defence of democratic principles, and his numerous developmental interventions in the areas of education, empowerment, and human capital development.
In a formal notification dated June 10, jointly signed by The Beagle News Editor-in-Chief, Dr. Judex O. Okoro, and Executive Editor, Dr. Anthony Bassey Ekpo, the editorial board praised Senator Jarigbe for his steadfast contributions to democratic governance in the state and beyond.
“The honour reflects your continued efforts to foster inclusive and participatory governance, championing policies and programmes that prioritise the people,” the letter to the senator read.
Dr. Okoro further explained that the choice of Senator Jarigbe for the award was based on popular sentiment from constituents and observers across the state who identified him as a model of effective representation. “Senator Agom was picked by voters for his numerous contributions to the development of his constituency and mankind in the area of human capital development and various empowerment initiatives,” he noted.
The Beagle News editorial board described the recognition as part of a broader campaign to spotlight exemplary public service and stimulate the growth of democratic values across Nigeria, particularly at a time when the nation continues to face challenges around transparency and accountability in governance.
Since his election, Senator Jarigbe has spearheaded several initiatives aimed at uplifting his constituents—including educational scholarships, infrastructure development, and youth-focused empowerment programmes—earning him widespread acclaim.
Democracy Day, observed annually on June 12, marks the legacy of the annulled 1993 presidential election, often hailed as the freest and fairest in Nigeria’s history, and pays tribute to the many who sacrificed for the nation’s return to civil rule.
As The Beagle News commemorates the day with this honour, it called on public servants across Nigeria to emulate Senator Jarigbe’s model of leadership by deepening their commitment to transparency, accountability, and service to the people.
“The official date for the presentation of the 2025 Hero of Democracy award will be announced soon,” the editorial board affirmed.
