Former Nigerian lawmaker, Senator Princess Florence Ita-Giwa, has commended the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) Cross River State Council for its dedication to preserving the rich legacy of journalism in the state.

Speaking at a special event organised by the NUJ to honour past journalists, Ita-Giwa lauded the union for recognising the contributions of veteran media professionals who played a pivotal role in shaping the state’s media landscape. She described the initiative as a testament to the union’s commitment to upholding the values of truth, accountability, and professionalism in journalism.

The event, held at the NUJ Secretariat in Calabar, was particularly significant as it featured the induction of the late Chief Beatrice Ita—one of Cross River’s pioneering female journalists and Ita-Giwa’s mother—into the prestigious Cross River Journalists Hall of Fame.

Reflecting on her mother’s legacy, Senator Ita-Giwa described Chief Beatrice Ita as a fearless and dedicated journalist who used her pen to fight for justice and amplify the voices of the marginalised. She urged young journalists to emulate the honourees by upholding professionalism, objectivity, and ethical reporting.

“I sincerely commend the Nigeria Union of Journalists, Cross River State Chapter, for this thoughtful initiative. Journalism remains a pillar of democracy, and it is heartwarming to see that those who gave their all for this noble profession are not forgotten,” she stated.

Reaffirming her unwavering support for the media, Ita-Giwa encouraged journalists to remain steadfast in their commitment to truth and fairness while contributing meaningfully to national development.

The event drew a distinguished audience, including top journalists, media stakeholders, and senior government officials, all of whom celebrated the enduring impact of journalism in Cross River State.
