The Nigerian Youth Congress (NYC) has warned youths in Cross River State against attending a planned summit by the Nigerian Youth Council of Nigeria (NYCN) in Bekwarra Local Government Area, describing the event as illegal.
Francis Offiono, State Chairman of the NYC, made the disclosure during a press conference in Calabar on Wednesday.
He cited the withdrawal of NYCN’s registration by the Corporate Affairs Commission (CAC) and its suspension by the Federal Ministry of Youth Development.
“The NYCN is currently proscribed, meaning the NYCN is officially forbidden, banned and made illegal by a formal rule, statute, or decree. Any activity, summit, or congress organized under the banner of NYCN lacks legal standing,” Offiono said.
He specifically referenced the upcoming Bekwarra summit, advising, “Cross River youths are advised to refrain from participating.”
Offiono emphasized that youth leadership must be lawful and structured. “Youth development is not achieved through noise or parallel authority; it is achieved through structure, continuity, legitimacy, and collaboration,” he said.
He also outlined the Nigerian Youth Congress’ plans to strengthen youth governance in the state, including the establishment of state and local councils, as well as specialized committees on youth empowerment, education, peacebuilding, media, and policy advocacy.
“The Nigerian Youth Congress exists to provide a coordinated platform for youth engagement, promote leadership development, civic responsibility, economic empowerment, and support peace and democratic values. We are partners in development, not pressure groups for disruption,” Offiono added.
The chairman called on Cross River youths to participate only in activities organized by legally recognized youth organizations and to report any unauthorized youth gatherings to relevant authorities.
