Tragedy struck in the early hours of Monday when a yet-to-be-identified man was electrocuted while allegedly attempting to vandalise a high-tension power line in the New Airport area of Calabar, Cross River State.
According to eyewitnesses, the incident occurred around 7:30 am when residents in the area were awakened by a sparks coming from an electric pole near a transformer site. Upon inspection, they discovered the charred body of the suspected vandal dangling from the pole.
Speaking to Primetime News, a resident, Mr. Daniel Essien, said this was not the first time such an attempt had been made in the area. “We have been experiencing frequent power outages due to cable theft and transformer vandalism. We suspect this man came with the same intent, but luck ran out on him,” he said.
