The former governorship aspirant of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) in the 2023 Cross River State election, Dr. Mkpang Coco-Bassey, has resigned from the party and joined the African Democratic Congress (ADC).
In a letter dated March 12, 2026, addressed to the Chairman of Ward 11, Calabar South Local Government Area, Dr. Coco-Bassey, an engineer and founder of the Coco-Bassey Foundation, formally notified the PDP of his resignation. The State Chairman of the party was copied on the letter.
“I write to formally tender my resignation as a member of the PDP, Ward 11, Calabar South Local Government Area, Cross River State,” he said. “This decision did not come lightly. I have been a committed and faithful member of the party, contributing my time, energy, and resources to its growth and success at both the ward and local levels. I deeply value the relationships and experiences I gained during my time with the PDP.”
Dr. Coco-Bassey expressed gratitude for the opportunities and support he received during his time with the PDP, while wishing the party continued success in its future endeavors.
Speaking on his next political move, he said his decision to join the ADC aligns with his ambition to work alongside national figures, including Peter Obi, to implement actionable economic policies aimed at transforming Cross River from a consumption-driven economy to a production-driven one.
He emphasized that this shift would help alleviate the hardships currently facing residents of the state.
Dr. Coco-Bassey is also the President of the Calabar Forum in the United Kingdom, highlighted that his defection add value to both local and international communities. He disclosed that his defection adds to a growing trend of politicians seeking alternative platforms ahead of future elections in Cross River State.
