The All Progressives Congress in Cross River State has suspended a member of the State House of Assembly, Ovat Dickson, representing Obubra I State Constituency, over alleged assault on his wife.
The suspension, which takes immediate effect, was conveyed in a letter issued by the Ward Executive Committee of the party.
The letter, jointly signed by the Ward Chairman, Stephen Ebokpo, and Secretary, Igrigri Samuel, stated that the action was taken in line with Article 21, Subsections (i), (iii), (vii) and (x) of the party’s constitution.
The party said the decision followed a formal complaint lodged against the lawmaker as well as his failure to honour repeated invitations extended to him to respond to the allegations.
It described the allegation of public assault against his wife as “deeply troubling” and unbecoming of a public office holder.
The letter read in part, “At the heart of this decision lies the deeply troubling and widely reported allegation of public assault against your wife — an act which, if established, represents not only a grave moral failing but conduct profoundly inconsistent with the dignity of your office.”
The APC noted that the alleged act, if proven, would violate the Violence Against Persons (Prohibition) Act, 2015, which criminalises domestic violence and has been domesticated in Cross River State.
The party also expressed concern over the reputational damage caused by the incident, noting that it had exposed the party to public criticism and embarrassment.
“The image of our party has been subjected to public scrutiny, embarrassment, and indignation,” the letter stated.
It further said the development had cast a shadow on the leadership of the state, including Governor Bassey Otu and his wife.
The party accused Dickson of failing to participate in ward and constituency meetings since assuming office, despite repeated calls by the Ward Executive Committee.
It added that the lawmaker has been placed on indefinite suspension from all party activities pending the outcome of a full disciplinary process.
The APC said a disciplinary committee would be constituted to investigate the matter and make appropriate recommendations in line with its constitution.
