The All Progressive Congress (APC) has launched its campaign ahead of the November 2nd, 2024 local government elections, in a grand ceremony that drew delegates, party chieftains, and stalwarts from across the 196 political wards in the 18 Local Government Areas of Cross River State. The event, which took place in Calabar, focused on the party’s vision for growth, unity, and effective grassroots governance.

Speaking at the flag-off, the Deputy Governor, His Excellency Rt. Hon. Peter Odey, rallied party faithfuls, urging them not to relent after the ceremony but to continue mobilizing support to ensure success at the polls. He emphasized the critical role played by the Central Senatorial District, particularly Ikom, in past elections, citing their decisive contribution during the 2023 governorship race. Drawing from this precedent, Odey expressed confidence in APC’s prospects, stating that victory was assured for all its chairmanship and councillorship candidates.

Odey also charged the chairmanship candidates to be proactive in addressing the needs of their constituents, ensuring that the dividends of democracy are felt across every part of their local government areas. “You must stay close to the people, understand their needs, and work tirelessly to meet them,” he urged. He further relayed the Governor’s directive that all elected chairmen must reside within their LGAs, a measure aimed at fostering accountability and better governance.

Earlier in the ceremony, the State Party Chairman, Barr. Alphonsus Eba, handed over the party flags to the 18 chairmen and chairpersons, expressing optimism about their chances. He attributed his confidence to the performance of the current administration under the leadership of the Governor, stating that its developmental strides have made his task as party chairman much easier. “The foundation has been set, and our candidates are ready to build on it,” Eba remarked.

The event was marked by goodwill messages from notable dignitaries, including Bishop Alex Ukam, Ntufam Fidelis Ugbo, Sen. Eteng Jonah Williams, and Rt. Hon. Elvert Ayambem. A recurring theme was the importance of reconciliation and unity within the party ranks to ensure a cohesive approach to the upcoming elections.

For Akamkpa Local Government Area, the emergence of Ophot Sir Felix Akposi (KSJI) as the APC candidate was highlighted as a harbinger of unity, growth, and development. Addressing reporters, Sir Akposi described his candidacy as a mission to harmonize structures and bring about genuine grassroots governance. “I see my role as a unifier, someone who can bridge divides and create partnerships that benefit all. My administration will be built on participation, partnership, and inclusivity,” he said.

Sir Akposi emphasized that his approach would be consultative, acknowledging that no leader can achieve success alone. “I am not all-knowing, so I will deeply and deliberately consult with my people. Together, we can bring about a government that truly serves,” he added. Receiving the party flag, he described the moment as historic and pledged that, when elected, his administration would reflect the will of the people of Akamkpa.

The emergence of Sir Akposi is seen by many as a symbol of renewed hope for Akamkpa, with expectations that his leadership will foster unity and pave the way for sustainable development. He assured the electorate that his government would prioritize the needs of the community, making them feel directly involved in the decision-making process.

The high point of the event was the presentation of flags to the 18 chairmanship candidates, a symbolic gesture marking the official start of the campaign. With the November 2nd elections fast approaching, the APC has set the stage for a vigorous and strategic drive to secure victories across Cross River State, with Akamkpa standing at the forefront of their vision for progress and inclusivity.
