Akamkpa Chairman rallies security forces to tackle quarry kidnappings

The Chairman of Akamkpa Local Government Area, Hon. (Ophot) Felix Akposi, has pledged intensified security measures following the recent abduction of two expatriates and the shooting of a police officer at the Marksino Quarry in Awi. During a high-level meeting with the officer in charge of the Rapid Response Squad and other key security stakeholders, Akposi decried the escalating trend of kidnappings targeting quarry sites within the LGA.

Speaking on the incident, Hon. Akposi described the security situation at the Marksino Quarry as “alarmingly porous,” attributing the breach to lapses in perimeter security and inadequate surveillance. He stated, “The brazen attack underscores the vulnerability of our industrial sites and the sheer audacity of criminal elements who now see quarries as easy targets. This must end, and we must take decisive action.”

To bolster the security framework, the Chairman issued a directive mandating the quarry’s management to implement strict gatekeeping protocols, including comprehensive security checks on all persons and vehicles entering or exiting the premises. “The era of laxity is over. Every individual and vehicle accessing the quarry must undergo rigorous security screening. No effort must be spared in ensuring the safety of lives and investments within this community,” Akposi stressed.

In a passionate call for collective responsibility, Akposi urged security operatives to redouble their efforts, emphasizing that complacency would not be tolerated. “Security is a collective responsibility. We must all up our game and close every gap that threatens peace and stability. The stakes are too high, and there can be no room for complacency,” he declared.

During the engagement, the officer in charge of the Rapid Response Squad affirmed the squad’s commitment to intensifying patrols around high-risk zones, including quarries, and collaborating with local security personnel to prevent future attacks. He noted, “Our mandate is clear: we will ensure a swift response to any threats and restore public confidence in our capacity to protect.”

The Chairman further highlighted the economic implications of insecurity on local and foreign investments, stressing that unchecked criminality would deter potential investors. “If we do not secure these sites, we risk crippling our economy and undermining livelihoods. It is our duty to protect what sustains our communities,” he warned.

In response, Marksino Quarry’s representative promised to convey the Chairman’s directive to the management of Marksino which will help them to enhance security measures and to collaborate closely with law enforcement agencies. “I will convey this important message for management to implement every security protocol recommended and to work hand-in-hand with the authorities to ensure the safety of our personnel and assets”.

With renewed focus on fortifying security at quarries and other vulnerable sites, Akposi’s resolve signals a determined effort to counter the scourge of criminality in Akamkpa and restore peace to the area.
