In a significant development for power infrastructure in Cross River State, Prince Eka Williams, the Commissioner for Power and Renewable Energy, presented ten transformers to the Port Harcourt Electricity Distribution Company. This initiative, made possible by the foresight of the people’s first Governor, Senator Prince Bassey Edet Otu, marks a concrete step towards ensuring widespread access to electricity across the state.

Addressing the media, Commissioner Williams highlighted the proactive approach of the administration in expanding power supply to all corners of the state. The initial phase of the project focuses on delivering 10 transformers to enhance power generation in the metropolis. Additionally, efforts are underway to restore power supply to areas like Bakassi and Akamkpa after prolonged outages, underscoring the government’s commitment to addressing long-standing challenges in the region.

“Our engineers are working tirelessly on-site to expedite the restoration of electricity to underserved communities,” Commissioner Williams emphasized. “It is crucial that we work together to protect and maintain these vital assets to ensure uninterrupted power supply.”

Expressing gratitude for the government’s intervention, Engr. Gabriel Modukpe, the Cross River Regional Manager of the Port Harcourt Electricity Distribution Company, lauded the Governor’s commitment to prioritizing the welfare of the people. “The collaboration between the government and the distribution company is a testament to our shared goal of improving the lives of Cross Riverians,” he remarked, highlighting the essential nature of electricity in modern life and urging residents to support efforts to safeguard power infrastructure from vandalism.

Elaborating on billing practices, Engr. Gabriel clarified that the issue of estimated billing primarily affects customers without meters, citing the Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC) capping policy as a guide for accurate billing in the absence of meters. He reassured customers of ongoing initiatives to provide free meters and the introduction of Meter Asset Providers to facilitate meter installations while ensuring equitable billing practices.

As Cross River State embarks on this transformative journey towards enhancing its power infrastructure, the collective responsibility of residents to conserve and responsibly utilize electricity remains paramount in sustaining the benefits of these initiatives.
