Cross River SOMTEC Conducts Refresher Training for Members

In a bid to enhance the capabilities of its members in preparation for community engagement programme, the Cross River State Social Mobilization and Technical Committee (SOMTEC) has commenced a refresher for its members.

The training, held on Friday at the Ministry of Information Conference Room in Calabar, during the monthly coordination meeting aimed to familiarize both new and existing members with the key thematic areas of the social behavior change campaign.

Speaking at the end of the exercise, the Permanent Secretary Mrs. Offiong Ani Offiong emphasized the importance of the training, particularly for newcomers, stating that all participants should be well-versed in the team’s field activities.

Mrs. Offiong noted that the refresher training is crucial for ensuring members are prepared to effectively engage with the community.

She highlighted that while specialists will offer in-depth knowledge in specific areas, it is essential for every member—including herself—to understand the campaign’s objectives, enabling them to respond confidently when approached in the field.

While commending the three resource persons for the day for a job weldone, Mrs. Offiong reiterated that the training will help to bridge any knowledge gaps among members, affirming that a well-equipped team is vital for the success of the community engagement initiative.

The training featured presentations from various experts including the State Social Mobilization Officer at the Primary Healthcare Development Agency, Mrs. Nsa Ekpenyong, who discussed Antenatal Care, emphasized the importance of routine check-ups to avoid complications, as well as offering advice on dress code and nutrition for pregnant women to promote safe pregnancies and improve maternal and infant health.

Mr. Asuquo Effiong, Head of Corporate Affairs at the National Population Commission, lectured on Birth Registration, detailing its significance for providing legal identity, ensuring access to rights, and securing essential services for children.
On her part, Mrs. Agnes Ugor, Community Mobilization Officer from the State Rural Water and Sanitation Agency, discussed Water, Sanitation, and Hygiene (WASH) practices, highlighting the necessity of clean water, proper sanitation, and hygiene in preventing diseases and promoting public health.

During the interactive session, participants—including Prof. Patrick Ineji, one of the resource persons, and Mr. Achombi Ntui from the Cross River State Broadcasting Corporation—described the session as a valuable opportunity that has equipped both seasoned members and newcomers with essential foundational knowledge for the tasks ahead.

Assistant Programme Officer Mr. Daniel Debia expressed his appreciation, stating, “Today, I can confidently advocate for WASH in any school because I now understand the negative impacts of poor hygiene. I am grateful to the Permanent Secretary for initiating this training.”

Members are expected to acquire valuable insights and skills that will empower them to contribute significantly during the community engagement programme.
