In preparation for the upcoming National Youth Council of Nigeria (NYCN) elections into the various Local Chapters in Cross River State, the Congress Planning Committee and Electoral Committee of the NYCN has paid a courtesy visit to the Ministry of Youth Development.
The meeting is aimed at strengthening collaboration and ensuring a smooth electoral process.
Speaking on Friday, at the Commissioner’s office, The State Chairman of the NYCN in Cross River His Youthfulness Comrade Emmanuel Olayi noted that the engagement is part of the NYCN’s commitment to conducting free, fair, and peaceful elections, centered on upholding the establishing principles and constitutional requirement as enshrined in the NYCN Constitution for candidates and increasing the participation of women in leadership roles.
Addressing the committee, Commissioner for Youth and Sports Development, Hon. Chief Barr. Ukam Ijom, reiterated the ministry’s unwavering stance on constitutional adherence, particularly the age requirement for contesting positions within the council.
“There will be no waiver on the constitutional age requirement which is between the ages of 18-35, we must promote fairness and transparency and address electoral tensions constructively. Sometimes, applying a gentleman’s approach like zoning can help foster peace and inclusivity during the process.”-He said
He called on greater female representation in youth leadership, noting that incentives and deliberate encouragement could help increase women’s participation and visibility in the NYCN and beyond.
Earlier, Comrade Emmanuel Olayi, stressed the importance of neutrality and professionalism from the committee, urging them to conduct an election free of bias and conflict. He reaffirmed the council’s commitment to operating within the legal framework while ensuring broad inclusion, especially of young women.
The NYCN CPC Chairman, Comrade Eyo Cobham Boco, expressed gratitude to the Commissioner and the Ministry for their guidance and support.
“With the insights shared today, the goals of a free and fair election, constitutional compliance, and greater female involvement are not only possible but within reach.” He went further to State that with this visit time table and guidelines for the 2025 NYCN local Government Chapters election will be out soon to ensure a smooth process.
The meeting marks a significant step forward in the NYCN’s efforts to foster democratic values, gender inclusion, and youth empowerment across Cross River State.
