Primetime gathered that Bassey and five other executive members were returned unopposed at the 2025 Triennial Delegates Conference held on Wednesday at the Ernest Etim Bassey Press Centre in Calabar.

The re-elected officers include Sunday Inah (Vice Chairman), Michael Abang (Secretary), Kingsley Agim (Assistant Secretary), Achiane Adams (Treasurer), and Benedine Tete Anam (Auditor).

Their new tenure runs till 2028.

The election, which was described as peaceful, was supervised by the NUJ national leadership. NUJ National President, Comrade Alhassan Yahya, was represented by Zone F Vice President, Comrade Opakah Dokubo. Also in attendance was Dr. Brenda Akpan, pioneer NAWOJ President, who chaired the conference.

Legal practitioner, Barr. Olive Onah, administered the oath of office to the newly elected executive members.

In her acceptance speech, Bassey thanked members for the renewed confidence and promised to lead with more humility and accountability.

“Our first term was a trial. We’ve learned lessons. What we did well, we’ll do better; where we fell short, we’ll improve. I need your support. Let’s move forward together,” she said.

Bassey also urged members to put personal differences aside for the unity of the council. “If I’ve offended anyone in the past, please forgive me. Don’t judge me by hearsay—come forward with ideas to move the union forward,” she added.

Commissioner for Information, Erasmus Ekpang, in his goodwill message, praised the union for its unity. “It’s better when candidates emerge unopposed. It shows maturity. The government will continue to support the NUJ,” he said.

Other speakers, including former Head of Service, Timothy Ogban Akwaji, and ex-NUJ Chairman, Nsa Gill, advised the new leadership to consolidate on their achievements, describing the re-election as a vote of confidence.

A lecture titled “AI: Ethical Implications for Journalism Practice in Nigeria” was delivered by Dr. Patrick Ene Okon at the event.

Bassey and her team were initially elected in May 2024 to complete the tenure of Comrade Nsa Gill, who was appointed Chief Press Secretary to the Governor.
