The Chairman of Akamkpa Local Government Council, Hon. Felix Akposi KSJI, has pledged that the council will fully sponsor the Primary 6 Placement Examination fees for every eligible pupil in the local government.
He made the announcement at a send forth ceremony held in honour of the immediate past Education Secretary of the Local Government Education Authority, Mr. Joseph Christopher Okon.
Speaking to an audience of head teachers, classroom teachers and invited guests, Akposi described primary education as the true foundation of every child’s growth. He noted that the children of Akamkpa must be given every advantage possible to secure their future.
“We learn every day and the last few months have been very eventful,” he said. “As key players in the progress of our local government, we will continue to support you because the children in your care are the carriers of our legacies and the leaders of tomorrow. As part of this commitment, the council will pay the placement examination fees for all Primary 6 pupils.”
He directed head teachers to liaise with the new Education Secretary, Mrs. Itaya Victory Bassey KSG, and submit the list of pupils to his office without delay. Akposi also reaffirmed that the council’s bursary programme, introduced earlier this year, would continue next year with improvements. He revealed plans to extend it to postgraduate students as a further show of the administration’s belief in education as a social equalizer.
Turning his attention to the celebrant, Akposi praised Mr. Okon for his years of service, describing him as a man whose dedication had brought the education community together in celebration. “You have retired but you are still part of us,” he said. “Your good works speak for you.”
The Chairman also assured teachers that significant rehabilitation works would soon begin in primary schools across the local government. He disclosed that three schools; Ikami, Ayaebam and Njahachan have already been assessed and approved for renovation.
He described the day as special, noting that it marked the first time a department had honoured him with an award since he assumed office. He received an award of honour for educational innovations and development, while Hon. Christopher Edet, Councillor representing Mbarakom Ward, was also recognised for his contributions to education. Edet, in his remarks, commended teachers for their central role in shaping society.
The event featured a debate competition by pupils of Army Primary School who spoke on the role of teachers in nation building, adding a lively touch to a ceremony that blended celebration with renewed commitments to educational growth in Akamkpa.
