The University of Calabar (Unical) Printing & Publishing Press Ltd., once on the brink of collapse, has undergone a remarkable transformation under the visionary leadership of the current Managing Director, Dr. Mathias Sunday. With years of experience as a seasoned graphic designer and print technologist, Sunday’s expertise has revitalized the press, positioning it as a model of excellence in the printing industry.
Dr. Mathias Sunday’s journey began with a clear vision to restore the Unical Printing Press to its former glory. Upon assumption of office, he embarked on a comprehensive overhaul, leveraging his technical expertise to streamline operations and enhance productivity. Today, the press stands as a testament to his dedication and strategic leadership.
Owing to his vision, the hitherto near moribund Printing Press can now boast of modern and sophisticated equipment. Sunday’s pragmatic approach led to the acquisition of cutting-edge machinery, including large format printing machine, direct imaging machines, 5 clamps industrial book perfect binding machine, industrial book sewing machine, utility vehicle for conveyance of finished products, overhauling of long abandoned kord & cutting machines, new set of computers, installation of CCTV cameras, new soundproof generating plant, installation of digital signage, incorporation of the press to a limited liability company, among others. This upgrade has significantly improved output quality, and efficiency.
With modern equipment and refined processes, the printing press now delivers jobs in record time, exceeding clients’ expectations. Under Sunday’s guidance, the Unical Printing Press has earned a reputation as a premier printing facility, attracting clients from within and outside Cross River State.
The unassuming, soft-spoken, humane and experienced graphic designer and print technologist prioritizes staff development and motivation, providing training and workshops to enhance skills and knowledge. He has also put in place rigorous quality assurance measures to ensure that every print product meets international standards.
However, the transformation of the Unical Printing Press would not have been possible without the unwavering support of the University’s Vice Chancellor, Prof. Florence Obi. The provision of modern equipment and infrastructure has empowered Sunday and his team to achieve unprecedented successes.
In a recent interview with a staff of the institution’s Public Relations Unit, Dr. Mathias acknowledged the Vice Chancellor’s immense contributions to the growth of the Printing Press. According to him, under her watch, the Printing Press has surpassed its target of becoming one of Africa’s leading Printing facilities. She has placed the Printing Press on a higher pedestal by equipping it with modern printing equipment. Two years ago, the Printing Press took delivery of sophisticated equipment – all thanks to the support of the first female Vice Chancellor of the institution.
According to the MD, “My success story will not be complete without mentioning the Vice Chancellor who has helped us attain this enviable height since she took over in 2020. She has adopted the Printing Press as her ‘ beautiful bride’ that is why we have been able to transform the press.
“Posterity will be kind to her for her immeasurable contributions towards reviving the printing press”
Even though the road to success is full of thorns, Dr. Mathias was undeterred in his avowed determination to change the narrative and trajectory of the Printing Press; he encountered some challenges but never gave up.
Dr. Mathias Sunday’s remarkable turnaround of the Unical Printing & Publishing Press Ltd. serves as a shining example of effective leadership and strategic vision. His commitment to excellence has not only revitalized the press but also positioned it as a beacon of hope for the printing industry in Nigeria and beyond.
The success of the Unical Printing Press would not have been possible without the tireless efforts of Mathias Sunday and his team, as well as the unwavering support of the University’s Vice Chancellor. Their collaboration has created a legacy of excellence that will continue to inspire future generations.
